GameBoy Jam 2 – Office

Office Title Screen

This game was created for GameBoy Jam 2. It is a puzzle platformer where the goal is to reach the exit of the level as fast as possible whilst avoiding the robots and hazards. The player can use their portal gun to create portals to teleport in the level. The player can also collect office supplies to achieve a greater score.

30 Day Challenge: October 2013 Summary

30 Day Challenge

So I finished my 30 Day Challenge of drawing robots every day. I believe it went well as I managed to draw one robot every day. In the end I managed to draw 31 robots (one for each day of October). Some of my drawings I like and others were drawn in a hurry. I have uploaded all my drawings and you can view them by clicking on this post.

GameBoy Jam 2 – Development Log

GameBoyJam-Logo

I decided to participate in GameBoy Jam 2. I decided to make a puzzle platformer game set in a office. As the jam goes on I will state the rules clearer for what the game is. This is because I will know what I will be able to implement depending on how much time there is remaining.

GameBoy Jam 2

GameBoyJam-Logo

I recently heard of the GameBoy Jam and I have decided to enter their second jam. GB Jam is video game development jam where developers create a game based around the theme of GameBoy. There are only three rules to the GB Jam. They are:

  1. Game must be GameBoy Themed.
  2. Keep in the original GameBoy screen resolution of 160px x 144px.
  3. Use only 4 colors in your game.

Why Mobile Games Are Not The Answer

Mobile Games

I recently read Neil Long’s article on Edge about why he enjoys iOS games over the big console releases.

I believe he makes several valid points and I understand where he is coming from, especially since I barely have time to play games myself these days (I am still playing L.A. Noire). However, I do not believe that iOS, or Android, games are the answer. There are some brilliant games on the mobile but 99% of them are pick up and play games. I never feel engaged whilst I am playing these games. All these mobile games feel like junk food. They are like chocolate snacks which you would have when you are hungry. After five minutes of eating, you will be feeling bad for having eaten that chocolate and will start to feel hungry again. These games will never quench your hunger.

How I Work

How You Work

I recently completed my post on Kinja about how I work. This is a series that Lifehacker does where they chat with productivity heroes about their habits, workspaces, inspirations, and more in their How I Work series. I thought I will post what I wrote on my Kinja onto my website so you can see my habits, workspaces and inspirations.

30 Day Challenge: October 2013

30 Day Challenge

I recently watched a TED talk by Google engineer Matt Cutts where he suggested that I should try something new for 30 days. During his TED talk, Matt stated that it takes 30 days to form a new habit or break an old one, so why not use 30 day challenges to make your life exactly what you want it to be?

I am going to take on his challenge. This month I want to improve on my drawings. Specifically, drawings of robots. Because who does not like robots. I am going to draw (minimum) one robot every day for the month of October. I will post all my drawings at the end of the month on my website. Wish me luck.

Augmented Reality Software

Augmented Reality Example

In my current job as a Technology Facilitator, one of my roles (among many) is to research on technologies that can help SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises). This past week I have been researching about AR (augmented reality) software. I decided to post my research on my blog as it may benefit anyone who is looking into AR.

Digital Art: Spacescape

I created this digital art last weekend. I was following a tutorial made by Tobias Roetsch and I must say, I am quite happy how it turned out. The image was made in Photoshop CS6 using stock images provided with the tutorial. I was not too pleased with certain aspects of the picture but I believe this is quite good for my first time doing digital art in over a year. Hopefully this will give me the urge and motivation to continue with the digital art.

Game Generator

Game Generator Screenshot

While I was playing some of the games from Ludum Dare #27, I was thinking where all the people who created the games get their ideas from. I know some people that can come up with ideas in seconds during a game jam whilst others struggle to find inspiration to continue making the game. I definitely belong in the latter group. So this week I decided to create a game generator which I could use during the next game jam I am going to participate in. Hopefully the game generator will stop me from struggling on the idea segment of a game jam. Now I just have to create a code generator that can help me during the coding segment of a game jam.

You can try out the game generator by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post. I will update the generator periodically so that it can continue to inspire me, and anyone else who wants to use it.

If you are a game developer, or someone who enters game jams, then let me know if you found the game generator useful, or how it could be improved and made better for future use, by leaving a comment.
