Lovepreet’s Quest To Find The Perfect Alcoholic Beverage

Alcohol Glasses

Over the years I have drank some alcoholic beverages but I never managed to find the perfect one. Therefore, starting from now, I am going to start my slow search to my perfect alcoholic drink. In this post, I am going to track all the drinks I had, and will have, over the years. So without further ado, you can see the list below.

Asahi
First drank in 2016
It’s better than Carling, but then again around 50% of the beers in the world probably are. I liked it but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get one. If there were a choice between Carling and Asahi, I would go with the latter.

Bacardi
First drank in 2008
It is too strong when it is neat or with ice, but with a little bit of coke, it is one my favorite rums I tried so far.

Bacardi Mojito
First drank circa 2011
It was pleasant and I enjoyed it the one time I had it. Need to try it again sometime in the future.

Bacardi Oakheart
First drank in 2016
I have been drinking Bacardi Oakheart for the past week and I have enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would enjoy rum. Okay, for the rum-aficionados Bacardi Oakheart is not ‘proper’ rum since it is a spiced rum. Nevertheless, I am not one of those aficionados; I am just one man on his quest to find his perfect alcohol beverage. Now back to Bacardi Oakheart. I tried it neat and found it too strong. Iced was much better and I could actually drink that without burning my throat. I could actually taste some of the sweet flavors. It was much more enjoyable than Bacardi with ice would have been. The hardest thing I did was trying it with coke. This was not because the drink was bad; it was because the Oakheart flavor was so hard to balance. It was either too weak or too strong, usually going in the direction of the former. This was also the main reason that I had to drink Oakheart over a week; I had to try to make a good mix so that I could have a good final impression of the drink. Overall, I enjoyed Bacardi Oakheart a lot more than I would have enjoyed Bacardi. The bottle is already half finished in a lot shorter period than I initially expected. However, I think Oakheart reaffirmed one of my initial feelings; rum is not my alcohol beverage. I still want to try Kraken one day, but I think for the time being, I am going to move back to whiskey. Maybe I will try some scotch next, but who knows. It will all depend on what is on sale at that period.

Baileys Irish Cream
First drank in 2015
I really liked it. It has a very good amount of whiskey and cream. It has a nice coffee taste with just enough kick. I will definitely be drinking it again during the winter seasons.

Ballycastle Irish Country Cream
First drank in 2015
I seem to be going through alcoholic drinks like they are water. Well if that is the price to pay to find my perfect alcoholic beverage, so be it. Ballycastle is a Irish Cream that I wanted to try during Christmas ’15, but sadly could not find a bottle anywhere. I decided to go out today, buy a bottle and try it. It has won awards in the past and I wanted to see if it was REALLY that good. I am normally a skeptical person but when I tried this, I thought I bought a bottle of Baileys. It was just that good. Now I cannot remember if it is better than Baileys since I last drank that in December ’15, so I deducted it one point. If I also included price in my quest for my perfect alcoholic beverage, then I would add an extra 10 points to the score. It is just that good when you compare it to the price (£3.75 when I bought it at the time of review). I have had takeaways in my past that cost nearly twice as much and left me four times as disappointed when I finished them. I will try and get bottle of Baileys and bottle of Ballycastle and drink them on the same day. I know this sounds like a really bad idea but it gives me a good excuse for having two bottles in the same day. It will also allow me to give a better view on which drink is better.
March 19 2016 update: Nope, Baileys is still number one. There is no beating that.

Bell’s Whiskey
First drank circa 2009
It gets better the more you drink it. Or it could just be that I was getting too drunk to notice the taste.

Buffalo Trace
First drank in 2016
From trying all these new drinks, I am starting to learn more about my drinking preferences. First thing I can say is that I like most of my drinks with either ice or water, just to dilute it enough so that it does not go down harsh. I also find that I struggle to distinguish the different flavors. Maybe I need to practice more. *Pours another glass* Anyway, back to Buffalo Trace. It reminds of Jack Daniels but slightly less harsh. I enjoyed it neat a lot more than I would have enjoyed Jack Daniels neat. It tasted much better with ice, diluting the taste just enough for me to enjoy it. I haven’t had a chance to try it with a mixer so I can’t comment on that yet.
February 15 2016 update: I tried it with a coke and it was really, really nice. Much better than Jack Daniels and coke. I can see myself drinking it all night (or until I pass out). The bad thing is that it loses its finish. After trying it for a few days, on the rocks and mixed, I think I prefer it on the rocks. You can get all the flavors when you have it with ice as there is no mixer stopping the flavors from coming through.

Bulleit Bourbon
First drank in 2016
I tried this neat, with ice and with a mixer (coke), but so far, none of the combinations tickled my fancy. I don’t know what it is about this particular whiskey, but I just can’t seem to enjoy myself. Don’t get me wrong, it is good, but nowhere near as good Buffalo Trace. Buffalo Trace left me wanting more. This just left me feeling like I drunk some alcohol. Having this with a mixer was the worst as I couldn’t taste any of the flavors. I preferred it most with ice as it brought out the flavors but it never left me with a burning flavor. I think it was the flavors that didn’t do anything for me personally. Maybe my palette isn’t refined enough for this whiskey. I will try this again in a few years, but as of now, I won’t be drinking Bulleit again. Well not after I finish the current bottle.
March 01 2016 update: I am still not sure about this drink yet, but I have been enjoying it the more I have been drinking it. I have stuck with drinking it on the rocks and have not been disappointed. I think I could say either the bottle was a bad batch or I was drinking it wrong. Nevertheless, I am updating its score from 70 to 77, just due to the enjoyment I have been having whilst drinking it recently.

Bulmers Pear Cider
First drank in 2016
This was one of the better flavored beers or spirits I have had so far. It had the right amount of pear taste without it being too sweet or overbearing. The drink is light and refreshing and I enjoyed it with and without ice. The only problem I had with this drink was that it was a bit gassy. After a bottle, I started to feel bloated.

Captain Morgan Spiced Gold
First drank in 2016
I was drinking this with food. Before I started to eat, I had one glass neat, and let me tell you, this was one sweet drink. It wasn’t as sweet as Jack Daniel’s Honey, but this drink definitely could use a mixer. I tried it with coke, and it was so much better. It diluted the sweetness just enough so that it doesn’t overpower the drink. I think it is just a little better than Bacardi, only because it doesn’t burn your throat when you drink it.

Not bad, but not good either. It is what it is, an average beer for an average day.

Gordon’s London Dry Gin
First drank circa 2008
Never drink it neat. It is horrid. But mixed with juice or tonic water (I prefer to go with the juice option), it is very enjoyable. So far, orange juice created the best combination.

I liked how light this beer tasted. But apart from the light taste, there was nothing else going for this beer. It tasted better than Carling, but it is not the best beer I have tasted so far.

Jack Daniel’s Honey
First drank in 2015
It is just too sweet. If I drink more than two glasses of it, my teeth and mouth will feel sticky like I swallowed a whole bag of sugar. The honey really does not complement the Jack Daniel’s in my opinion.

Jameson
First drank circa 2010
This will be a very inaccurate rating, but a rating any way. Every time I drank it, someone poured too much Jameson into my glass. It had an excessively strong taste for my liking. I will try it again sometime in the future but as of now, I do not like it.

Jim Beam Apple
First drank in 2016
It has the same problem as Jack Daniel’s Honey, after more than two drinks my mouth felt all sticky. But unlike Jack Daniel’s Honey, the smell and taste was much better. You can really taste the apple flavor. It was enjoyable both neat and on the rocks. It was also nice with just a splash of water.

Johnnie Walker Red Label
First drank in 2016
Johnnie Walker Red Label is made for mixing. For testing purposes, I did drink it neat and on the rocks and it wasn’t that good, even though I never expected it to be. This is a budget scotch and I could tell that from the taste. With coke, it was alright but nothing special. There was nothing standing out from this drink.

Kopparberg Pear Cider
First drank in 2016
I am not really a big cider drinker but as I am on a quest, I cannot discriminate any alcoholic drink. If I had Kopparberg Pear Cider when I first started to drink, I would have loved it. But as I have gotten older, my taste has gotten, let’s go with refined. Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice drink. Really nice but also really sweet. Not as sweet as Jack Daniel’s Honey but it is getting there. I won’t be disappointed if somebody hands me this drink but I also won’t get overly excited when I see someone serving Kopparberg Pear. I can probably drink two bottles (500ml) before my mouth starts to feel too sweet. I can’t compare it to other Ciders, but as my first Cider drink, I can’t complain.

Maker’s Mark
First drank in 2016
I heard nothing but good things about Maker’s Mark and after trying it, I can see it was not lies. Maker’s Mark tasted brilliant. After having my first glass, I can see that care was put in it. There was no ‘harsh’ aftertaste after my first sip (that alone puts it 50% above most whiskies). The flavors of Maker’s Mark seem much stronger compared to other whiskies, but when drinking Maker’s Mark, it does not seem to be that strong. It will never overpower a drink, which makes it great for first-time whiskey drinkers. The drink goes down smooth, whether you drink it neat or on the rocks. But, I did find Maker’s Mark to be the first drink where coke ruined the flavor. Overall, I enjoyed it. Really enjoyed it. The only thing that goes against the drink is that it costs much more than Buffalo Trace but only adds a little more flavor than that drink. If it were cheaper, I would rate it much higher. However, at the time of writing this, Maker’s Mark has moved to the number one spot on my drinking list.

Martell VS Cognac
First drank in 2016
This is the first cognac I have had, and I must say, it was a good experience. I started by drinking it neat and was surprised it didn’t burn. Not sure why I thought it would burn. Anyway, it has the right amount of sweetness to it, which made it delightful to drink. It also smelled a little bit of fruits, which is always nice. It was nice with ice. Not sure how it is with a mixer since I didn’t have a chance to try it with one.
