Akuto: Mad World March Update

Akuto: Mad World - Quarry Kills

Welcome to March’s monthly update for Akuto: Mad World. This month I had to go to TWO long conferences/workshops, so work was spent mainly on the server-side for the online mode of Akuto: Mad World. I also went to GDC (Game Developers Conference) to showcase the game at the Xbox Lobby Bar. On the other days, I had some meetings and had a chance to speak to other developers on what they used for online mode. In the end, I decided to stick with P2P for the online mode, and host the matchmaking system on my own server.

You can read on to see what major updates were released in March, with a full list of updates following that. At the bottom of this post, you will find what I am planning for next month. And remember, if you like the game, recommend it to your friends or leave us a review.

Akuto: Mad World is now available from Steam, Humble Store, and itch.io. Join us on our Discord server to talk more about Akuto: Mad World and our other games.

New Content in March

Quarry level
Somebody wanted it back, so I brought it back.

Online
So I finally set up AWS and managed to make the NAT punchthrough work on there. This means I no longer have to rely on a third-party for the NAT punchthrough.

I have also started working on the matchmaking system and have set that up on AWS as well. But instead of moving everything from Steam to my own matchmaking system, I have decided to redesign to make sure it is more future-proof. Some of the things I am adding are that players can add the region they are hosting from, what platform they are playing from, and chat! Okay, chat is a maybe, but it looks highly likely at the moment.

Fixes and Updates in March

  • Quarry level playable offline, again
  • Quarry level playable online

Plans for April
My plan for April is to have the online working to at the least same state as before and start working on the extra features I have planned, which include custom usernames (for DRM-free players), chat, and quick messages. Sounds easy, right? Well I promise you that it is far from easy.
