10 Reasons Websites Fail

10 Reasons Websites Fail

Yesterday I did a talk at Creative Monday about my business (Tall Whale). Since most people already know what a web designer does, I decided to focus my talk on reasons why websites fail and how I would fix them. The talk was (surprisingly) well received. Here is a link to my presentation for anyone that is interested. One day I will update the link to a proper handout that will include more detail. But that day is not today.

Why Chromebooks Should Replace Your Laptop

chromebooks

I am not going to lie. I like Chromebooks. I believe they are great. I believe they can be suitable alternative for 96% of laptop users. However, most people do not know that Chromebooks exist. Even people who know that Chromebooks exist do not know if it is the right device for them. In this blog post, I am going to write about what are Chromebooks, my experience with using the Acer C720P, and the type of users that should be using a Chromebook.

I also know that recently I have been posting less about games and more about technology. This will change very soon. I have had these articles saved for some time and decided to post them now, as I did not have much game-related content to post. Someone might be interested in this information, and someone out there on the World Wide Web found it useful. If not, it is here for everyone to see for the rest of time. This does not mean I am stopping game development or stop posting game-related content. In fact, I have big news that I am going to announce in the very near future (hopefully before the end of this month, otherwise early next year). But back to the topic on hand.

Printing Ourselves Into The Future

I have been recently researching about 3D printers at my current job. Some of the things I learned from this research were quite interesting so I decided that I am going to post some of my research on my blog. I will start this blog post explaining what 3D printing is, how it works, where it has been used and my views on three different 3D printers I had used in the past.

Raspberry Pi Camera Timelapse

So I bought a Raspberry Pi camera module couple of weeks back and created some time-lapses of my garden in the back. The video above shows you one of the time-lapses I captured via the Raspberry Pi camera. I thought this was going to be fairly difficult but it turned out to be simple. So in this post I will tell you how to create your own time-lapse using your Raspberry Pi (this post will most likely be useful for other beginners like me).

Pairing A Bluetooth Keyboard With A Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi Logo

This is a step by step guide on how I managed to pair my Bluetooth keyboard (RII ProMini) with the Raspberry Pi. This might help people who are struggling with it just as I was.

  1. First of all, start with a fresh install of NOOBS on your Raspberry Pi and install Raspbian. This will rule out anything you have done before that would prevent this guide from working.
  2. The Bluetooth installation was not working with me when I was using the latest NOOBS build so I went with a build before December 8th 2013 (November 4th 2013 build). I have noticed on several different forums that the latest build of NOOBS is using a kernel that is stopping most, if not all, Bluetooth dongles from working. I am not sure how true that is since I am not a Linux expert. But I can say that my Bluetooth keyboard worked with a older build of NOOBS and not with the latest build.

  3. Plug the Bluetooth dongle directly on the Raspberry PI board.
  4. Boot the Raspberry PI and connect to it using SSH from another computer.
  5. All you need is an SSH client like PuTTY, the IP address of your Raspberry and your login credentials. I would not recommend using a wired keyboard since my installation would not work when I was using one. This could have just been a one-off situationso it might not happen to you. Just do not say that I did not warn you.

  6. Switch to root.
  7. sudo -s

One Month With The ZTE Open And Firefox OS

ZTE Open

It has been over one month since my ZTE Open arrived. For those of you who do not know the ZTE Open is a smartphone that runs Firefox OS. Firefox OS is the first operating system that is run by web technologies (well most of it). I still remember how excited and happy I was when my ZTE Open arrived. In this post I am going to write a summary of how it has been using the ZTE for just over a month.

30 Day Challenge: January 2014

30 Day Challenge

Let me start this post by wishing everyone a Happy New Year! As this the beginning of the new year I thought I will start it of with a new challenge. As most people would have noticed that over the last couple of years tablets have started to appear everywhere. They have took a big market share from traditional computers and 2014 does not look any different. I have always preferred a computer over a tablet as I never felt it was possible to do any real work on tablets. This is mainly because tablets have been known as devices where you consume content whilst computers are devices where you can create content. Because of this, I have always been skeptical of the people who claim that tablets are the only device that we need and that computers will become obsolete. I know this will never be true because tablets will never provide the screen size, power and usability of a traditional desktop, or even a laptop/notebook. But I do wonder how much work is possible to do just from a tablet. So I am going to put this to the test.
